While the news that an accessible playground has been approved for the Orchard Park subdivision is an exciting move for the city, the friendly amendment sought by councillor Gary Clarke will allow for a more inclusive community for generations to come.
At the March 7th council meeting, members approved an expenditure of $600,000 for the construction of the Parish Park playground.
During that meeting, councillor Clarke put forward an amendment, which was fully endorsed by members.
With St. Thomas continuing to grow at a record pace, Clarke notes “we might as well start upgrading to that standard.”
The new 10-acre park slated for 50 Empire Boulevard, will not only feature a playground, but will see an outdoor fitness equipment area and accessible pathways crafted from recycled rubber.
Clarke notes materials such as woodchips, most recently used at Pinafore Park, while they technically fall under the “accessible guideline” are very difficult for users to maneuver.
Installation of the playground is set to begin this spring, with continued work expected this fall due to supply chain issues.
