We have our first declared candidate in this year’s municipal election.
St. Thomas Mayor Joe Preston announced this morning (Wednesday) he will seek a second term to continue with a “smart growth” plan for the city.
In a conversation with myFM, Preston explained the timing of today’s announcement.
First elected mayor in 2018, Preston stressed, “There are some pretty important things in the growth of St. Thomas I want to be part of.”
Preston told myFM there is much to accomplish in the remainder of this term to push forward council’s smart growth agenda.
A plan that focuses on jobs, services, inclusive amenities and, most important, housing.
He noted the importance of opening up new settlement areas for area homebuilders.
Preston added, if we don’t have land for them to build on, “that would be a mistake.”
The four-term MP also made it clear the word ‘No’ will not be in his campaign vocabulary when it comes to moving the city forward.
Preston noted there have been plenty of positive developments in St. Thomas in spite of the pandemic however, “We have to make sure we’re prepared for what is coming.”
It is Preston’s hope when it comes time to hit the campaign trail that the process remains civil, which has not always been the case in recent mayoral races.
In announcing his intention to seek re-election Preston advised, “Job creation, community involvement and mentoring are my lifelong passion.”
