A fire at 301 Carlow Road in Port Stanley Tuesday has unfortunately claimed the life of a family pet. Central Elgin Fire Rescue were called to the scene just before 9 p.m., requiring crews from stations in both Port Stanley and Union.
Firefighters made entry through the front door where they were welcomed by heavy, dense smoke leading from the kitchen. Once in the kitchen, crews located a substantial fire but were able to knock it down fairly quickly notes Central Elgin Fire Chief Ray Ormerod.
While crews worked on the fire, they were alerted that one of the family dogs was missing.
Firefighters located and attempted to save the family dog, working for over 30 minutes, however they were unsuccessful.
While a damage estimate has not been released at this time, Ormerod does say the home sustained substantial smoke and fire damage.
Crews cleared the scene shortly after 11 p.m. and will return today to conduct a damage estimate and continue to investigate the cause of fire.
