A rare UV Index of 11 should make you think twice before heading out today without applying sunscreen.
Mother nature has brought about the summer like weather with it feeling like 39 today, and the UV index labelled as “extreme.”
Recently, myFM in the Morning had the chance to speak with Cheryl Rosen, the Head of Dermatology at University Health Network Toronto Western Hospital, about sunscreen safety.
She notes when picking out the sunscreen, it’s important to read the label.
Rosen adds that it doesn’t necessarily matter if you lather the sunscreen on or if you use it in moderation, what matters is you make sure you are doing it properly.
Health Canada recommends reapplying every 2 hours, but Rosen says it’s good to reapply after 20 minutes, just incase you missed any spots the first time.
Rosen says spray sunscreen is O.K., if that is all you use, but lotion is recommended as it offers fuller coverage.
If you use spray sunscreen, be sure to apply indoors or in a covered spot away from the wind. Remember to also rub it in!
