For one St. Thomas teen, it’s a summer of flying high.
And for Kendra Berg a flight toward clarity in her choice of careers.
Eighteen-year-old Berg is one of 12 female air cadets from across the province attending a Power Pilot Training Course at Windsor International Airport. It’s a critical step in obtaining her private pilot license.
The Parkside Collegiate Institute grad explains what the intensive seven-week course entails.
Berg is Warrant Officer First Class with 741 Squadron in St. Thomas.
It all began with a Grade 6 field trip to London International Airport.
She credits her family with endless amounts of support as spends her summer doing what she loves most, flying.
A choice of careers for any young person can be a daunting decision filled with uncertainty.
For Berg, she has already narrowed it down to a pair of options, both of which involve high-flying paths. The next step begins is this fall when she begins her commercial aviation courses at Fanshawe College.
When asked what part of flying she enjoys most, Berg sort of leans toward the take off.
Although it might have been a concern at first, Berg does not feel being a female is holding her back from achieving her goals.
It is a summer of mixed emotions for Berg as she will age out of air cadets at the end of the summer.
Berg is an enthusiastic proponent of the air cadet program, noting it has changed her life.
