In a repeat of the 2018 municipal vote, Joe Preston was successful in his re-election bid Monday night.
And while he is reluctant to call it a landslide, Preston with 5,526 votes prevailed over former mayor Heather Jackson by a margin of 2,614 votes.
Newcomer Gregg McCart finished with 906.
Preston had nothing but praise for all of the St. Thomas candidates in this year’s municipal vote.
All sitting members of city council seeking re-election were successful in Monday’s municipal vote.
The two vacant seats were filled by Rose Gibson on her sixth council bid and newcomer Tara McCaulley.
Preston offered his congratulations to both successful candidates who will be sworn in next month.
As was the case in 2018, Steve Peters topped the councillor race with 7,385 votes, a little more than 800 less than his count four years ago.
The key takeaway from Monday’s municipal vote was the dismal turnout. At 30.6 per cent, it was the second lowest in the past 60 years.
The lowest was 29.3 per cent in 1970.
With the seven members of council successful in their re-election bids, Preston tells myFM he believes voters got the message on what has been accomplished this term.
Preston says he will seek input from all eight members of the new council on what they heard while campaigning.
