Work is now underway on the green space and activity centre on the site of the former Colin McGregor Justice Building.
To be known as Westlake-Evans Civic Park, creation of the green space was first announced in June of 2020.
The much-needed recreational space in the city’s core is courtesy of a $500,000 gift from the Estate of Donna Vera Evans Bushell.
Estate consultant, Andrew Gunn, describes some of the features to be found in the park.
Last month, city council approved a $515,000 contract to begin transformation of the vacant lot into an imaginative park.
At the announcement of the creation of Westlake-Evans Civic Park in June of 2020, Gunn noted “there will be an outdoor classroom and play area for children because we really wanted to build a park that spoke to people of all ages.”
Key to that is its location, explains Gunn.
Gunn tells myFM the park should open next spring.
St. Thomas Public Library CEO Heather Robinson noted at the announcement, “We have been looking for outdoor space to be able to do programming . . . and just be able to connect with our community in a new way.”
With work now underway, Gunn calls the prospect of a downtown community hub “exciting.”
