Under a canopy of colourful umbrellas, several hundred attended this year’s St. Thomas Service of Remembrance at Veteran’s Memorial Garden.
This morning’s commemoration contrasted with the much-shortened services of the past couple of years during the pandemic.
Royal Canadian Legion Lord Elgin Branch 41 Poppy chairman Adrian Williams said the large gathering was heartwarming.
Since 2017, Veterans Memorial Garden on Moore Street has been the venue for St. Thomas Service of Remembrance.
Williams told myFM he is “extremely impressed with it.”
Previously the Nov. 11 services had been held on the grounds of St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital.
Williams says he was pleased with the large turnout in spite of the less-than-ideal weather.
It was the support of individuals attending Services of Remembrance in the past that motivated Williams to become a member of Royal Canadian Legion Lord Elgin Branch.
Williams was encouraged by the number of young people in attendance this morning because they will be the future of the Royal Canadian Legion.
This year’s poppy campaign is wrapping up and Williams has an update for myFM.
