A six-month waste collection pilot project may ultimately result in a tidier downtown.
The city has tweaked the pick-up time for curbside garbage collection for businesses.
In the past many business owners put out garbage the night before for early morning collection.
With the pilot project, garbage is now collected between noon and 6 p.m., explains Michelle Shannon, the city’s waste management coordinator.
The pilot project launched on Dec. 9 and is designed to cut down on garbage sitting out all night and reduce scavenging.
Shannon says the city’s contractor, Green For Life, will be consulted at the end of the project to determine possible adjustments.
Garbage will continue to be collected Tuesdays and Fridays.
While geared to helping businesses, the city’s waste contractor will also reap benefits.
Shannon calls it a win-win situation for businesses and Green For Life.
The pilot project will be evaluated after six months.
