The Ontario Provincial Police are hoping to see more women consider a career in policing and they are on a recruiting drive hoping to accomplish just that.
OPP East Region Recruiter Cst. Merisol Primeau says there’s a simple reason why that is: they feel the numbers are too low.
Primeau says they’ve seen only a 1% increase in women in uniform join the OPP over the past decade.
She adds about 22% of the current 5,500 OPP officers are women.
Primeau says they look for well-rounded individuals as future constables.
She says the OPP offers wonderful career opportunities in a variety of roles after cutting your teeth working on the road.
The OPP plans on hiring 400 police officers this year, and has invited women from across Canada to attend an event, including a virtual presentation on March 16.
