It was an afternoon full of ‘ride alongs’ for the St. Thomas Police Wednesday. But in this case, it wasn’t the officers in the drivers seat as they joined volunteers for VON’s Meals on Wheels program to make the much needed deliveries throughout St. Thomas and Elgin County.
It was all part of VON’s Annual March for Meals, a day dedicated to shining a light on the ever-so important program that seniors in our community rely on.
That was Tifanie Smith, VON’s Volunteer Coordinator in Elgin County.
She explains that hot meals are prepared daily by local homes, including Terrace Lodge, Elgin Manor, Extendicare and the St. Thomas Seniors Centre, which are then delivered by VON volunteers to residents living in Aylmer, Malahide, Southwold, Sparta, St. Thomas, Port Stanley, Union and Shedden.
And because it’s not everyday the volunteers get a helping hand, Smith notes how heartwarming it is to receive this support.
For those who may be interested in volunteering with VON, Smith explains how they can work around your schedule!
