A solution to the water woes at Oneida Nation of the Thames was announced last week.
The federal government is providing $43 million to hook the existing Oneida water supply to the Lake Huron Primary Water Supply System near Mt. Brydges.
Oneida Coun. Brandon Doxtator tells myFM the significance of this announcement in the community.
A boil water advisory has been in effect at Oneida since 2019.
When completed it will signal an end to the reliance on thousands of cases of bottled water over the past three years, notes Doxtator.
The water infrastructure project is expected to take 18-24 months to complete.
In the meantime, an interim measure is being introduced, explains Doxtator.
A State of Emergency was declared in the community last December due to historic low levels in the Oneida water tower.
Improvements to the fire service will be phased in adds Doxtator.
He is hopeful the community will benefit from job creation during construction of the 18-km pipeline.
