With rain being a rare commodity over the past couple of weeks and nothing in the forecast until at least the weekend, a fire ban is now in effect for St. Thomas and all of Elgin county.
This includes open air fires and recreational fires such as campfires, bonfires and chimineas.
St. Thomas Fire Chief Dave Gregory says it is a case of being proactive.
Gregory notes the ban will remain in effect until further notice.
He says all burn permits are now suspended and no burn permits will be issued across the county until the ban is lifted.
Gregory adds if you discover an open air fire to call 9-1-1- immediately. He notes do not delay reporting while attempting to control or extinguish the fire.
