More than 500 volunteers from 31 workplaces across London, St. Thomas, Middlesex and Elgin, spent the day Thursday rolling up their sleeves to help improve lives locally as part of the United Way’s Day of Caring.
In St. Thomas, The Inn, our homeless-to-housing shelter was the landing site for dozens of volunteers who spent the afternoon completing a laundry list of items, as Executive Director Brian Elliot explains.
Elliot notes how much of an impact Day of Caring has on them.
He adds that small actions such as painting a bathroom can do so much to the morale of places like The Inn.
myFM also had the chance to speak with Cassie Vella, who spent Day of Caring volunteering with General Dynamics Land Systems. She notes how impactful is it to spend an afternoon giving back.
Vella adds how important this opportunity is to their team.
Similar initiatives were undertaken at organizations across St. Thomas-Elgin, including at Big Brothers Big Sisters of St. Thomas Elgin, YWCA St. Thomas-Elgin, Ignite Youth Services and Mennonite Community Services of Southern Ontario in Aylmer, thanks to volunteers from the City of St. Thomas, Doug Tarry Homes Ltd., EPCOR, General Dynamics Land Systems – Canada and Libro.
