A House of Commons committee says the federal government should look into whether “best before” dates on food should be scrapped.
Experts told the committee probing grocery affordability that misconceptions about the dates lead to increased food waste.
Best before dates are required for foods that are expected to go bad within 90 days, such as eggs and milk.
The C-E-O of Second Harvest Canada, Lori Nikkel, says the date refers to the freshness of the food — not whether it is safe to eat.
