A flag raising at St. Thomas City Hall Friday morning has officially kicked off Elgin County Pride Week.
Running August 7th to 13th, the week is a celebration of acceptance, diversity, inclusivity and respect for all across Elgin County.
With Monday being a holiday, the community joined Mayor Joe Preston, MP Karen Vecchio, representatives from council, the St. Thomas Fire Department and St. Thomas Police among others, for an early celebration.
Spokesperson Devon Church explains why the simple act of raising a flag in support of Pride is so important.
A number of events have been planned for next week, including their first celebration in Aylmer on Monday notes Church.
Church explains what exactly will be taking place.
Also taking place is a Pride Community Swim at the YWCA Wednesday, before the fun moves to Pinafore Park on Friday.
Church adds that planned events will wrap up Sunday with a special Interfaith Community Celebration
