Back to School means back to making lunches for our young students.
Registered Dietician Danielle Labonte says it’s important to pack a balanced lunch with at least one food from each of the categories on Canada’s Food Guide.
She also says there are some things you can do to help improve the odds that what you pack will get eaten.
Get them involved too, have them help pack their own lunch.
Labonte adds that with the cost of food these days, packing nutritious lunches can be a challenge. She says it’s a far reaching problem, but there are ways that you can stretch your dollar.
She also checks the flyers each week to find deals and ideas. You can prepare your own food when possible, as pre-packaged foods cost more. This could include cheese, crackers and deli meat as opposed to purchasing a “Lunchable.”
Her final suggestion is using reusable containers, a bonus for the environment that keeps packaging and wrappers out of landfills.
