AG Day was created over 20 years ago to celebrate the Elgin county farming community’s rural roots and educate staff and students about the rich offerings of agriculture and the thousands of related career opportunities.
This event was the initiative of former St. Joseph’s teacher and principal Mrs. Campigotto and her Student Council.
Over the years, St. Joe’s has had the support of local farmers, universities, colleges, and businesses to bring AG Day to life.
This has taken the shape of livestock, demonstrations, guest speakers, interactive displays, activities, and displays of farm machinery.
Many St. Joseph’s students come from farming backgrounds so AG Day also allows other students a glimpse of what their days consist of helping on their family’s farm.
Until this year, the school has invited junior grades from the London District Catholic School Board, but size constraints made it unfeasible to accommodate large numbers.
In addition, St. Joseph’s offers a Specialist High Skills Major in Agriculture which gives students an opportunity to receive different agricultural-related certifications and a red seal on their graduation diploma. For students moving to post-secondary or the world of work, this gives them additional qualifications.
St. Joseph’s annual AG Day on Thursday (Oct. 19) was a huge success this year.
Students attended school in a variety of outfits and made use of plaid, jeans and even cowboy hats.
Students had the opportunity to visit the many available stations on their lunch.
They started the day off strong with a complimentary country breakfast comprised of eggs, sausage and hash browns.
A number of games staffed by the school’s Student Council sprinkled the school grounds: hay bale toss, pumpkin rolling, corn hole, and more.
In addition to these games, a huge number of activities and displays were present throughout the three lunches: mini-cows, goats, lassoing practice, a country-themed photo booth, rehabilitated kittens and many more.
AG Day was also able to support St. Joe’s girls’ rugby team through a great BBQ and bake sale that provided students with a filling lunch and tasty treats.
Overall, the students at St. Joseph’s celebrated yet another successful AG Day for the 23/24 school year!
