The federal government is giving automakers 12 years to phase out combustion engine cars, trucks and S-U-Vs and gradually increase the proportion of electric vehicles on their sale lots each year.
Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault on Tuesday afternoon announced new regulations that will effectively end the sale of new passenger vehicles powered only by gasoline or diesel in 2035.
He says the regulations will encourage automakers to make more battery-powered cars and trucks available in Canada, starting with 20 per cent of all sales in 2026 and rising to 100 per cent in 2035.
