Last year in the West Region there were 14 fatalities involving snowmobiles, mostly attributed to impaired and inattentive driving.
Now’s a good time to talk about how we can change that number as it’s Snowmobile Safety Week.
OPP Constable Jeff Hare said that this week is a great reminder for snowmobile enthusiasts.
Hare shared several reminders for drivers to make sure that you can have fun and keep safe.
He also advised keeping your phone charged, checking weather conditions, wearing proper equipment, as well as carrying a survival and basic first aid kit.
Regarding licensing and standards, Hare outlined that a valid driver’s license is required. Younger operators must take a course and can operate a snow mobile on private property.
Constable Hare underlined the importance of riding respectfully.
Addressing motorists at roadways intersecting with snowmobile trails, Hare drew parallels to sharing the road with cyclists, emphasizing the need to slow down and drive with respect.
