The first Thursday in February will forever be known as “Optimist Day” in St. Thomas following an official Proclamation by Mayor Joe Preston this morning.
The raising of the Optimist International flag also marked the annual day, which encourages individuals to be an Optimist themselves through action and honour clubs and their members for all they do in our communities.
Optimist International President, Tracy Huxley was on hand for the celebration and spoke with myFM about the significance of the day.
Huxley says it’s an opportunity for clubs to come together and reflect on the efforts of the over 70,000 International Optimist members.
Because as Huxley notes, Optimist Clubs have made an impact in all our lives at one point or another.
From locals events like the Optimist Santa Claus Parade to the sponsoring of youth sports teams, Huxley says none of this would be possible without its members.
As we look to honour those members for all that they do, Huxley gave a few examples of simple gestures you could make.
To celebrate the day, the Talbot Trail Optimist Club will be sponsoring free mini golf at Railway 1856 – Ultimate Mini Golf in the Elgin Centre tomorrow from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. More details can be found here.
