With Environment Canada advising of significant rainfall this week, the Kettle Creek Conservation Authority has issued a flood outlook.
Total accumulation could range from 30-50mm before the system is expected to move out of the area Thursday.
“Increased runoff is expected, which will result in elevated water levels in local creeks and streams,” says Jennifer Dow, Water Resources Supervisor for Kettle Creek Conservation Authority. Local watercourses may reach or exceed their banks, leading to localized flooding in floodplains, ponding in low lying areas and agricultural fields, and locations with poor drainage. Watershed areas that receive prolonged heavy rain due to thunderstorm activity have a heightened risk for flash and minor localized flooding.
The authority reminds parents to use extreme care around all watercourses, flood plain areas, reservoirs and ponds as the banks can be very slippery and, when combined with cold, fast-moving water, pose a serious hazard.
Residents along Kettle Creek and the Lake Erie shoreline are advised to monitor their local conditions as they can change quickly with little warning. It is also recommended to remove property from low-lying areas and to clear any debris from storm drains.
The flood outlook will remain in effect until 8:30 a.m. Friday.
