Preventing crimes before they can occur is always the best way to keep our communities safe. That’s the message during Crime Prevention Week running through November 9th.
The St. Thomas Police are using the week to share some important messaging with residents about what they can do to keep their families, neighbourhoods, schools, and workplaces safe from criminal activity.
Corporate Communications Coordinator, Samantha Wakefield shares the focus on Thursday.
- Locking All Doors: Keep vehicle doors locked at all times, whether parked at home or out in public. Thieves often look for unlocked cars as easy targets.
- Installing Visible Anti-Theft Devices: Devices like steering wheel locks and audible alarms not only add layers of security but also act as strong visual deterrents for would-be thieves.
- Using a Vehicle Immobilizer: Immobilizers prevent a car from being hot-wired, making it harder for thieves to start the vehicle without the correct key or fob.
- Investing in a Tracking System: Tracking devices allow stolen vehicles to be quickly located, increasing the chance of recovery and discouraging theft.
“Auto theft is a community issue that requires both vigilance and preparation,” said Staff Inspector Steve Bogart of the St. Thomas Police Service. “By following these prevention tips, each vehicle owner can take proactive steps to safeguard their property. This shared approach to prevention is critical for building a safer St. Thomas for everyone.”
With auto theft prevention as a shared community responsibility, St. Thomas Police Service encourages all residents to take simple steps to protect their vehicles and contribute to a safer neighborhood.
