A resolved insurance issue involving the province and the Thames Valley District School Board means the East Elgin Secondary School swim team will be able to dive back into the water.
As a result, the two dozen or so members of the team were expected to begin training this past week according to Cameron Charlton, parent of one of those swimmers.
Discussions between the school board and the Ministry of the Solicitor General over use of the indoor pool at the Ontario Police College (OPC) began earlier this year with a Nov. 15 deadline established by the board, after which the swim team would have to forfeit the season.
Swim team volunteer Heidi Weninger pointed out the issue was not directly tied to the OPC.
Charlton noted it is all about taking care of the kids.
Thanks to a public push by parents of swim team members and input from Elgin-Middlesex-London MPP, the season is no longer in jeopardy.
Their season will begins as scheduled early next month.
The OPC pool is also used by the Aylmer Optimist Arrows swim team and the YWCA-St. Thomas-Elgin.
Charlton has a close affiliation with the Arrows. It’s where his swimming career began.
