The NDP won’t back the Liberal’s $250 rebate cheques, planned to be sent out in 2025, unless changes are made.
Jagmeet Singh said he initially supported the idea because he was told the rebate cheques would go to anyone who earned under $150,000 last year.
His party will not back the plan unless something is done to correct this.
With that, Singh said the NDP will support the GST break being proposed by the Liberals, though he added it doesn’t go as far as his party would hope.
The Canadian Press received a response from the spokeswoman for Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland who said it would be “categorically false” to say seniors and people with disabilities are excluded from the rebate.
“In order to qualify, you just need to have made less than $150,000 in net income in 2023 and meet one of the three following criteria: received EI benefits, paid EI premiums or made CPP contributions.”
