St. Thomas Police are investigating a distraction theft that occurred in the city Wednesday, resulting in a stolen wallet and $600 in fraudulent purchases.
According to police, two individuals distracted the victim, creating an opportunity to steal their wallet. A bank card from the wallet was later used to buy merchandise.
The incident is under investigation and police encourage anyone with information to come forward.
The STPS also issued a reminder on how to prevent similar thefts:
- Secure Your Belongings: Keep wallets, purses, and other valuables close to your body, preferably in zipped or buttoned compartments.
- Stay Aware: Be mindful of your surroundings, especially if approached by strangers asking for help or starting unusual conversations.
- Avoid Distractions: Be cautious if someone attempts to divert your attention, such as asking for directions or pointing out a supposed issue with your belongings or vehicle.
- Report Suspicious Activity: If you notice anything unusual or feel targeted, contact the police immediately.
