With school back in session this week following the winter break, you probably noticed the increased traffic on your commute.
School buses have returned to local roadways and little feet are once again walking to and from both schools and bus stops.
Following the recent tragedy on Longwoods Road west of Lambeth that claimed the life of 7-year-old Dante Caranci, myFM reached out to Kevin Murray at First Student Canada in St. Thomas to share some vital reminders with the community.
Dante passed away from injuries he suffered when he was hit by a vehicle after getting off a school bus on December 16, 2024- a horrendous incident that could have been avoided.
For those who don’t encounter a school bus on the regular, Murray reminds drivers that the lighting system on buses is much like a traffic signal.
Adding that when the stop sign is out, motorists must wait for the bus driver’s okay to go.
It’s also important to remember that school buses tend to follow the same route everyday. Murray says that if a bus continuously stopping for students is going to cause you frustration, to find a different way to your destination.
And because bus safety is a collaborative effort, Murray notes that students need to do their part as well.
Something unique to the winters months adds Murray is the risks that come with snow accumulation. While road conditions are a factor, it’s not the only issue.
As we gear up for the second half of winter, Murray shared that First Student St. Thomas is looking to add more drivers to the team.
Those interested can reach out to him directly at 519-851-3304 to learn more about available positions.
