Beginning today, Thames Valley District School Board (TVDSB) students will gather at Western Alumni Stadium in London for two days of celebration, inclusion, and athletic achievement at the board’s annual Special Olympics.
More than 1,400 student athletes and 1,300 peer coaches from 74 elementary and 26 secondary schools are participating in this year’s event, which runs June 10th and 11th.
Elementary athletes compete today, with secondary events set for Wednesday.
“The Special Olympics is one of the many ways TVDSB champions equitable and inclusive opportunities for all. Participants need to feel welcomed, respected, and part of their school communities,” said Bill Tucker, Interim Director of Education for TVDSB. “We believe the Special Olympics inspires positive and lasting change in the lives of athletes, families, coaches, volunteers and everyone who cheers on these incredible athletes.”
Opening ceremonies will begin each day at 10:15 a.m., followed by a full schedule of events including wheelchair and track races, long jump, shot put, softball throw and games designed for athletes of varying abilities.
