While much of the talk of late related to the rapid growth of St. Thomas has centred around industrial expansion, there is no reason housing needs to take a back seat.
In a presentation to city council earlier this month, Sean Dyke, CEO of the St. Thomas Economic Development Corp., advised that 2024 was the second best year on record with 601 new housing starts.
A significant number of those starts were apartment units in Phase 2 of Alma College Square and at the Highlands on Talbot Street.
In 2020, there were 628 housing starts.
In the past five years, there have been over 2,300 housing starts.
Dyke observed, “It’s really good to see the city diversifying a little bit on the residential side and not focusing solely on single-family homes.”
Last year, approximately $250 million in residential building permits were issued.
