Upsetting news out of the St. Thomas Police Service today.
Retired Police Service Dog Axle died over the weekend.
Axle served the community from 2017 to 2024 and had an impressive resume of bad characters he and handler Const. Sean James brought to justice.
There were numerous memorable moments including the time in 2022 when he was struck by a vehicle while attempting to stop a suspect on a bike.
The man was eventually apprehended, taken into custody and charged with theft and escaping custody.
Axle was taken to an animal hospital for observation and recovered at home with handler Const. Sean James.
Last year, Axle’s spot on the K-9 roster was assumed by newly sworn-in PSD Rocky.
On his retirement, Chief Marc Roskamp observed Axle has “charmed everyone at many community events. We wish Axle a happy life as a family pet as he transitions to his new lifestyle.”
A tribute on the St. Thomas Police Service website noted, “Though his time in service ended earlier than we expected, and his retirement years were far shorter than we would have hoped, his contribution to public safety in St. Thomas will be remembered with respect and gratitude.
