There’s a new tick in town this summer — and it’s carrying a serious bacterial infection.
Veterinarian Courtney Thomas explains what pet owners should know.
So far, this tick has only been found in one location in Ontario — Long Point Campground on Lake Erie — but four dogs in our region have already been diagnosed.
The infection is called Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever.
Symptoms in dogs include a loss of appetite, rash, and fever, but it can be treated with the same antibiotic used for Lyme disease. Humans can get it too, and in both people and pets, it can be serious if not treated promptly.
