A 71-year-old individual suffered injuries and their dog was killed Tuesday in a pit bull attack at Oneida Nation of the Thames.
Members of the Oneida Nation Police Service, Middlesex OPP, and Oneida EMS responded to a Bodkin Road address just before 8 p.m. where the two unleashed pit bulls running loose had attacked.
The victim was able to reach their residence and call emergency personnel.
When they arrived, they found the two dogs, one of which lunged at an officer who ended up shooting the animal.
The victim was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Police remind all pet owners to ensure dogs are always leashed or properly contained to prevent dangerous encounters.
Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact the Middlesex County OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or report anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS), where you may be eligible to receive a cash reward of up to $2,000.
Oneida Public Safety posted the following notice on the Oneida Nation of the Thames Facebook page:
Recent incidents of dog attacks have reminded us that unsecured pets put our children, elders, and neighbours at risk. We cannot wait for tragedy to act. Every unleashed dog near roads, playgrounds, or public spaces threatens the safety we cherish as Oneida people.
We need ALL dog owners to join this effort starting TODAY:
SECURE YOUR DOGS: Leash or tether dogs when outdoors (strong rope/chain prevents tragedies).
SUPERVISE: Never leave dogs unattended where others may pass.
CHECK TETHERS: Ensure they’re untangled and can’t reach roads or neighbouring yards.
REPORT AGGRESSIVE DOGS:
Why this matters:
• Safety is a sacred responsibility – to our children, elders, and each other.
• Protecting property must not endanger people. Securing dogs shows respect for all.
WE’RE TAKING ACTION TOGETHER:
• COMMUNITY SOLUTIONS: Elected Chief & Council are developing a humane animal safety plan
• NO BLAME, ONLY SOLUTIONS: We understand resources are limited. This is about shared safety, not shame.
