It’s been a quiet commute the past couple of months with many big yellow school buses sitting idle — but that’s starting to change.
Drivers have been out practicing their routes to prepare for the return to class, and by Wednesday, roadways will once again be filled with students heading back to school.
In addition to our local police services increasing their presence around school zones, First Student Canada in St. Thomas wants to ensure everyone is aware of the role they play in bus safety.
That was Branch Manager Kevin Murray, who notes it takes a collaborative effort. By preaching bus safety both at home and at school, it drives home the importance of following the rules.
Murray shares some insights on the dangers that could occur while out on the road.
He adds that if something does go wrong, it’s often the actions of people on the bus and not the bus itself.
Murray also reminds motorists of the lighting system on school buses. He says much like a traffic signal, if the light is yellow, it’s time to slow down.
Please remember that school buses tend to follow the same route every day. Murray says that if a bus continuously stopping for students is going to cause you frustration, to find a different way to your destination.
