St. Thomas Police are warning residents to be cautious after a local person lost more than $15,000 to a phone scam.
Police say the victim was contacted by someone posing as a bank investigator, claiming their account had been compromised. The caller insisted the only way to resolve the issue was to pay restitution using gift cards from various retail outlets.
Trusting the scammer, the victim purchased and provided the cards, only to realize later they had been defrauded.
The case has been turned over to the Criminal Investigation Branch for further follow-up.
Police remind residents that no legitimate business or financial institution will ever demand payment in gift cards. Anyone who receives a suspicious call is encouraged to hang up and contact their bank directly.
