Families in the region will no longer have to travel outside of St. Thomas for many high-risk deliveries.
St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital (STEGH) has announced that pregnant women at 32 weeks gestation or later can now deliver at the hospital.
Before this move, expectant mothers at that stage were transferred elsewhere, often creating stress when infants needed care away from home.
The change comes as STEGH’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) has been designated Level 2b, allowing it to provide more advanced care for newborns who need specialized support.
Monica Olanski, Vice President Patient Services and Chief Information Officer, says the milestone reflects the dedication of the hospital’s NICU team and will make a meaningful difference for families. “Providing care closer to home not only supports mothers during delivery but also strengthens family bonds during those critical early days of an infant’s life,” she said.
STEGH leaders say the expansion reaffirms their commitment to keeping high-quality care available within the community.
