The St. Thomas Fire Department is urging residents to check their smoke alarms this weekend as part of the province’s third annual “Test Your Smoke Alarm Day” on Sunday, September 28.
It continues to be a local issue, notes Chief Fire Prevention Officer Kim Destun, who reports that 51 per cent of false alarm calls in the first half of 2025 were due to malfunctioning or unmaintained smoke alarms.
Issues the fire department continues to see include dead batteries, expired units, and alarms that haven’t been properly tested. Destun says this has caused some significant safety and financial implications. Beyond diverting crews from real emergencies, non-functioning alarms leave vulnerable people at risk.
Residents are encouraged to test all smoke alarms in their homes, replace units older than 10 years, and ensure batteries are fresh.
The STFD is promoting the day through social media and public education, and is offering resources for residents who need assistance with smoke alarms.
