It’s Small Business Week, and 94.1 myFM is celebrating entrepreneurship across St. Thomas and Elgin County — proudly presented by Once Upon A Letter.
Today we’re featuring a local favourite that’s been serving the community for nearly 35 years — Briwood Farm Market.
The store first opened its doors in 1991 on the east end of St. Thomas and has grown into a go-to destination for fresh, local produce, bulk foods, dairy, and everyday essentials. For those who have always wondered, co-owner Brian Giles shares that the name “Briwood” comes from the combination of his and his business partner Sherwood’s names.
When asked what inspired them to open Briwood, Giles recalls an opportunity that came at the right time — and one that’s now become a lifelong commitment to the community.
Since then, Briwood has become more than just a market. It’s a community hub where customers are treated like friends, and local partnerships are at the heart of every aisle. Giles says one of the best parts of running the business is supporting other small entrepreneurs, offering shelf space for locally made goods.
As Briwood approaches its 35th anniversary next year, Giles says it’s hard to believe how quickly time has flown by. The store has evolved with the community, now serving a growing base of young families who value fresh, local, and convenient shopping.
Through it all, Giles credits Briwood’s success to its loyal customers — many of whom have been shopping there for decades.
That connection, he says, is what keeps small businesses thriving in St. Thomas. Adding how grateful he is for the continued support.
Looking ahead, Giles says Briwood doesn’t plan on making any major changes — just continuing to focus on what they do best: keeping things simple, local, and personal.
And with fall in full swing, the market is stocked with seasonal favourites — from colourful squash and fresh produce to an impressive variety of pumpkins of all shapes and sizes.
Briwood Farm Market is located at 1030 Talbot Street in St. Thomas, where “Fresh is second to none.”
