51 initiatives throughout the country have been approved for funding through two Federal infrastructure programs, and included in that list is the plans for the new Port Stanley fire station.
The Government of Canada and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities is investing more than $2.4 million into 51 new projects in communities through the Green Municipal Fund and Municipal Asset Management Program.
The Port Stanley fire station is 1 of the 6 initiatives approved under the Green Municipal Fund and will be receiving $23,100 to go towards the plans of a net zero facility. The Green Municipal Fund is a leader in driving local green innovations across the country and have cut 2.5 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions across Canada.
The Municipality of Central Elgin has proposed that the new fire station be a net zero facility, meaning the total amount of energy used by the building on an annual basis, is roughly equal to the amount of renewable energy created on site.
Plans to meet these standards include double glazed windows, more efficient building systems, LED lighting, geothermal heating that would be utilized for heating or cooling of the building and a 60 kilowatt solar panel system would generate power.
