A London woman faces an extortion charge following an investigation by St. Thomas Police on behalf of the London Police Service.
Fifty-year-old Mariam Hamou, a former London city councillor, was taken into custody late Friday afternoon and released with a future court date in London.
She is also charged with harassing communications.
According to the CBC, the victim in this case is London Mayor Josh Morgan.
Due to a potential conflict of interest, the Community Safety and Policing Act requires such matters to be investigated by an external police service to ensure transparency and impartiality.
