Residents across St. Thomas, Aylmer, and eastern Elgin County are being urged to brace for strong and potentially damaging winds as Environment Canada issues a Yellow Wind Warning for the region.
Forecasters say powerful southwesterly winds will continue this morning with the passage of a strong cold front, with gusts reaching between 80 and 90 kilometres per hour. In some areas near Lake Erie, gusts could approach 100 kilometres per hour before winds shift to the northwest this afternoon and begin easing this evening.
Environment Canada warns the winds could lead to local power outages and damage to roofs, fences, tree branches, and temporary structures. Residents are encouraged to secure loose outdoor items and use caution when travelling, especially in open or rural areas.
The windy conditions may also combine with snow and flurries today, creating areas of blowing snow and reduced visibility. Local snowfall amounts of up to five centimetres are possible, with temperatures falling throughout the day.
Winds are expected to remain strong into the evening before gradually weakening overnight.
Residents are encouraged to continue monitoring forecasts and alerts as conditions evolve.
