Ontario has introduced tougher penalties for impaired driving as part of new rules now in effect across the province.
As of January 1, 2026, drivers convicted of impaired driving causing death will face a lifetime licence suspension. The change makes Ontario’s penalties among the strictest in the country.
For first-time impaired driving offences, roadside licence suspensions have increased to seven days, up from three. Offenders must also complete mandatory remedial education before regaining full driving privileges.
All impaired driving offenders are now required to install an ignition interlock device. The device measures blood alcohol concentration before allowing a vehicle to start and can prevent repeat offences.
Drivers with a blood alcohol concentration over 0.16 per cent will face harsher consequences. Those penalties include longer licence suspensions and mandatory participation in the ignition interlock program.
Provincial officials say the changes are designed to improve road safety and reduce impaired driving.
Motorists are being reminded to understand the new rules and the serious consequences of driving impaired.
