Incorporated in the shadow of the First World War, the Royal Canadian Legion this year celebrates its 100th anniversary.
With an initial focus on advocacy, the Legion remains an advocate for veterans.
The Legion’s official anniversary is July 17 with events planned in Ottawa and across the country.
Participating in those celebrations will be Lord Elgin Branch 41, which also celebrates its centenary later this year, noted President Tom Marks.
There are more than 1,350 Legion branches across the country, built on the strength of members and volunteers.
With the community at large benefitting from the Legion’s support, pointed out Marks.
He explained where those funds are distributed in St. Thomas.
To celebrate its centenary, all branches of the Legion are offering free memberships for this year.
Marks pointed out the benefits of membership.
The emphasis is on fellowship and looking after the community, stressed Marks.
In a media release, Berkley Lawrence, Dominion President noted, “We are so proud of this organization and its members and thrilled at the prospect of welcoming new members from all parts of Canada to our ranks during our centenary year, many of whom we hope will be with us for a long time to come.”
For those interested in joining the Legion, Marks offers this invite.
“Well, if you’re around the Legion, come on in. The membership forms are very easy to fill out. They’re right there as soon as you walk in. Any member is going to point them out and welcome you and help you fill it out if you need it.”
