Southwestern Public Health (SWPH) has extended the Cold Weather Alert issued for Elgin County, Oxford County, and the City of St. Thomas.
Environment Canada is forecasting continued extreme cold across the SWPH region, with temperatures expected to reach lows of –24°C and wind chill values near –30°C.
The cold conditions, which have persisted in recent weeks, are forecast to continue through Saturday.
Public health officials are urging residents to take precautions to reduce the risk of cold-related injuries, including frostbite and hypothermia.
They recommend limiting time outdoors, dressing in warm layers, covering exposed skin, and avoiding alcohol and caffeine while outside. Residents are also encouraged to prepare their homes and vehicles for winter conditions and to seek medical attention if symptoms of frostbite or hypothermia occur.
You are reminded that warming centres are available across the region, offering a safe, heated space for anyone needing temporary relief from the cold.
