Ontario saw an increase in food bank use in 2018. A group called Feed Ontario has released a study showing over 500,000 people visited an Ontario food bank last year.
All together, the total came to over 3 million visits across the province. Fortunately, St. Thomas did not place in the top 10 municipalities using food banks but data shows that roughly 9000 people in Elgin County had to rely on the food bank last year. It is estimated that 1/3 of the people that utilize the food banks in Elgin County are children.
MPP for Elgin-Middlesex-London, Jeff Yurek issued a statement to myFM saying since taking office, the provincial government has introduced several measures to help keep money in the pockets of residents. Yurek says they want to make life more affordable across Ontario and says the government will continue to take steps to ensure that Ontarians who are fighting to lift themselves out of poverty get the support they need.
myFM is hoping to help out those that utilize the different food banks in Elgin County with our All Hands On Deck Food Drive. For more information about the food drive, click here.
