It started with a simple idea—neighbours helping neighbours.
Four decades later, that vision has grown into nearly $80 million in support for the St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital, transforming patient care across our community.
As the St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital Foundation marks its 40th Anniversary, myFM had the opportunity to sit down with Executive Director Ryan Byrne and Hospital President and CEO Karen Davies to discuss the impacts of the partnership.
Byrne says the milestone is a reflection of a community that continues to show up for one another, ensuring local patients have access to the care they need, close to home.
From the hospital’s perspective, Davies shared that it’s a partnership that has had a direct and lasting impact, helping to bring advanced technology and expanded services to St. Thomas-Elgin.
That includes items such as CT scanners to everyday bedside equipment, all helping ensure patients can access modern, timely care without leaving the region. For patients and families, that means fewer trips out of town, shorter wait times, and the ability to recover closer to home and loved ones.
Recent campaigns undertaken by the Foundation highlight just how significant that impact can be.
Looking ahead, both hospital and foundation leaders say the need for support is only growing. Davies outlines some possible next steps for STEGH as demands become more complex, putting added pressure on infrastructure, staffing, and services.
The Foundation, meanwhile, is preparing for its next chapter—supporting equipment upgrades, improving patient comfort, and continuing to respond to emerging needs.
As both Byrne and Davies look to the future, they say the same partnership that has defined the past 40 years will continue to play a critical role in STEGH’s success.
