By the onset of summer, area residents will have improved access to family healthcare.
Thompson Medical Centre is planning to open a new medical facility in the Elmdale Health Centre at 25 Elm Street.
To be known as TMC St. Thomas, the new family physicians’ office will join a pair of Thompson Medical Centres open in London. (See photos)
The first centre opened 10 years ago on Thompson Road, near Victoria Hospital and the second London facility open in 2020 in Hyde Park.
Direcotor Dan Muldoon explains the rationale behind the new St. Thomas facility.
The Elmdale Health Centre now houses a dental office, LifeLabs, a pharmacy and other healthcare services.
Once fully operational, TMC St. Thomas will have five family physicians along with five or six staff, explained Muldoon.
All of the physicians have been recruited in the U.K., advised Muldoon.
Included in that complement of doctors is one female physician, an important consideration, stressed Muldoon.
Muldoon explained TMC St. Thomas has activated the new patient process.

The aim is to open the health centre in July, advised Muldoon.
“But, if we are able to get things done sooner, we will open sooner. But, there’s a lot of thing that we have to do, like order supplies, get computers, can the doctor start earlier?
“All of these things have to align.”
While the hours of operation have not yet been finalized, the two London clinics are open Monday to Thursday 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Saturday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
“So we’re hoping to do about the same there in St. Thomas,” he advised.
