For many older adults in St. Thomas, our local seniors’ centre is more than just a place to pass the time, it’s a place to connect, stay active, and support mental well-being.
The St. Thomas Seniors’ Centre, open to anyone aged 50 and over, offers dozens of programs each week ranging from fitness classes and games to arts and social activities. But staff say what truly sets it apart is the sense of community created within its walls.
Executive Director Angela Ostojic says that connection can be life-changing.
From shuffleboard and cards to exercise classes and group activities, the centre’s programming is designed to support both physical and mental health. And while staying active is important, staff say it’s often the social side that has the biggest impact.
Office Manager Angela Walker-Davis, who has worked at the centre for more than two decades, says the environment inside the centre naturally lifts people up.
That sense of belonging is something members themselves say makes a difference.
Debbie Scratch, a volunteer and member, says she was first introduced to the centre through her mother and quickly understood why it meant so much.
Now a regular participant in programs such as exercise classes and drum fit, Scratch says that staying active and connected has had a noticeable impact on her day-to-day life.
Meanwhile, fellow member Bob Clarke says even stepping outside your comfort zone, like trying line dancing for the first time, can have lasting benefits.
Clarke says beyond the physical benefits, the friendships and social interaction play a key role in overall well-being, something he believes becomes even more important with age.
As Mental Health Week highlights the importance of connection and support, staff at the centre say the message is simple: taking that first step can make all the difference.
Ostojic says for those who may be hesitant, just walking through the doors is often the hardest, but most rewarding part.
The St. Thomas Seniors’ Centre continues to welcome new members, offering not just programs, but a place where older adults can build friendships, stay active, and feel part of a community.
