St. Thomas Fire Chief Dave Gregory is asking city council to approve the establishment of a vacant building registry bylaw.
The call comes after a blaze last year at the former Weatherhead building and two fires in downtown heritage buildings.
Under the bylaw, owners of vacant buildings would have to register their properties with the municipality and provide responsible-party contact information.
They would also have to submit regular confirmation that buildings are secured, weather-tight, and compliant with all applicable requirements.
The matter will be discusses at this evenings (May 19) council meeting beginning at 5.
