The Ontario Provincial Police are urging boaters and paddlers to wear lifejackets following new data on marine fatalities.
Over the past 10 years, 249 people have died in OPP-investigated boating incidents, with 83 per cent not wearing a lifejacket or wearing one improperly.
Officials say capsizing and falling overboard remain the leading causes of death on the water.
The OPP is reminding residents that wearing a properly fitted flotation device is the simplest way to improve survival chances.
