With the price of used vehicles nearly doubling in price since 2019, MP Andrew Lawton and Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre are looking to scrap the federal sales tax on those vehicles.
Lawton has introduced a private member’s bill, The Used Car Tax Cut Act, to save Canadians thousands of dollars on used vehicles purchased at dealerships.
Lawton stressed that in rural communities, owning a vehicle, “Is a necessity, not a luxury.”
Currently, no matter how many times a vehicle is re-sold, the sales tax is applied each time.
He adds that the price of used cars on average is now $36,700, up from $18,900 in 2019.
Statistics Canada added used vehicle prices to its Consumer Price Index for the first time in June, 2022.
myFM will be speaking with Lawton next week about Bill C-285.
